My DataVisualisation - Production Project B

Rationale

Production Project B for Networked Media production - a Data Visualisation.

Have decided on Data; a comparison between the number of 2D versus 3D feature length animated films made from the 90’s through to the 2000’s.

Let me now define 2D or ‘traditional’ animation versus 3D Computer Generated animation (or simply Three-dimensional animation)

2D animation includes all hand drawn animation (Eg Disney films like Snow White, Pinocchio etc), or images produced on a flat plane (For example hand drawn animation then transferred to a painted cell) - it may sometimes give the illusion of depth or of a character or object in three dimensions, but it is still bound to a flat surface.

3D, (Eg Pixar films like Toy Story, Up etc) is animation produced in a three dimensional virtual space inside a computer using computer technology. There is sually much more scope for realistic shadows, textures, lighting with this type of animation than 2D animation.

It’s simply a personal interest of mine as I love the medium of animation. Plus, I’d be interested to find out if the current vogue (And domination of the box office) of 3D feature length computer animated films is reflected in the number of 3D animated films being made.

I would assume that the number of 3D animated films being made would be greater than the number of 2D films being made, but will shall see.

I am aiming to present this data in video format, with animated elements to reflect the subject matter.

Now have to find appropriate source for data. Early searches are not giving me any type of animation forum or respected source, such as an animation focused website, or they have a lot of information on 3D animated films, but little on traditional 2D animated films.

There is a list of feature length animated films on Wikipedia which I may simply have to examine, film by film, and tally the number of 2D versus 3D from year to year. Obviously I will also have to ask permission to use the data.

Have not been able to find a better source of data, so am going with the wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_feature-length_films#1990’s

Now simply have to tally the data. Some films I am already know to be either 2D or 3D from my own viewing, others I am checking the content on their linked pages to clarify.

Progressing on my Datavisualization to represent data findings. Video will feature two animated images; one an animated galloping Toaster I plan to hand draw myself - as I have been unable to find an animated Gif that satisfies me

Also, most Gifs aren’t hand drawn, although they do fulfill the definition of having been made on a flat plane.

My Toaster will represent 2D Traditional hand drawn animated feature films.

The other animated image will be a Computer Generated spinning Cake; a model I found included in the BluffTitler software, which is license free to use, as it’s part of the package for users.

My Cake will represent 3D computer animated feature films.

They will race side by side on screen, as the various years (1995 - 2005) roll by them, in the form of Titling. As they pass the two animated images, the no of films made that year will also flash on screen. There will be a total at the end of the video.

The reason I have chosen to focus on the years 1995 - 2005 is a website below:

http://virtualunderworld.net/arianeb/animated.htm

Whose reasoning I agreed with, ie, that 1995 marked the year of the first fully computer generated animated film (Toy Story) and that 2005 marked the year that CG animated films become the standard and no longer an ‘event’ or a rarity - this notion is also reflected in my data, as 2005 marks the year of most CG films produced, at least in respect of this time frame.

I plan to approach the creator of this page and ask whether I can use her reasoning, detailing her website was the inspiration for my Data Visualizations time frame frame, and including a link to her website in my datavis.

Wikipedia does not provide Administrator contacts to ask for permission to cite or reproduce material from wikipedia

But I found this page

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use

from the the ‘terms of use’ hyperlink at the bottom of the page I’m sourcing the data from, so as long as I provide these details on my datavis, it should be ok.

This page was also quite helpful:

ArianeB has also given permission for me to cite her as an influence on my bracketing the data between the years 1995 - 2005
