Wk 12 Blog - Production Project B

Working on Production Project B for Networked Media production.

Have decided on Data; a comparison between the number of 2D versus 3D feature length animated films made from the 90’s through to the 2000’s.

Let me now define 2D or ‘traditional’ animation versus 3D Computer Generated animation (or simply Three-dimensional animation)

2D animation includes all hand drawn animation (Eg Disney films like Snow White, Pinocchio etc), or images produced on a flat plane (For example hand drawn animation then transferred to a painted cell) - it may sometimes give the illusion of depth or of a character or object in three dimensions, but it is still bound to a flat surface.

3D, (Eg Pixar films like Toy Story, Up etc) is animation produced in a three dimensional virtual space inside a computer using computer technology. There is sually much more scope for realistic shadows, textures, lighting with this type of animation than 2D animation.

It’s simply a personal interest of mine as I love the medium of animation. Plus, I’d be interested to find out if the current vogue (And domination of the box office) of 3D feature length computer animated films is reflected in the number of 3D animated films being made.

I would assume that the number of 3D animated films being made would be greater than the number of 2D films being made, but will shall see.

I am aiming to present this data in video format, with animated elements to reflect the subject matter.

Now have to find appropriate source for data. Early searches are not giving me any type of animation forum or respected source, such as an animation focused website, or they have a lot of information on 3D animated films, but little on traditional 2D animated films.

There is a list of feature length animated films on Wikipedia which I may simply have to examine, film by film, and tally the number of 2D versus 3D from year to year. Obviously I will also have to ask permission to use the data.
